Just before The Runaway Pastor was published and released, I had been making chapters of another novel--BREAKERS--available here. Once The Runaway Pastor was released, my attention turned to its promotion. At least for the first month or so.
I'd like to share a bit about BREAKERS (BREAKERS is only a "working title." It could change at any time.) This is a project I've been toying with for about eight or nine years. I used to give myself the week between Christmas and New Years to write. And BREAKERS was one of the first things I began. This was long before I ever thought of being a "writer." I just wanted to play with some thoughts and questions that were playing in my mind. Those thoughts still rent space in my head. In fact, they are even more prominent than when I began writing them.
So, those of you who were following along with the development of BREAKERS, don't think that it has forever been put away. I've had it on a side burner, so to speak. But it is beginning to receive some time here and there as I write about walls between the church and the world, or proper boundaries between those "unequally yoked."
In the meantime, I continue to receive encouraging words and sales reports from The Runaway Pastor. Report after report are demonstrating that people are beginning to understand better the conflicts and trials often faced by pastors. I know of one small group that has passed it around until nearly everyone has read it. A recent review suggests hosting a discussion group centered around the book and support of their pastor.
Keep your reviews, comments and spreading the news via word of mouth going. I continue to hear words of encouragement from people in "the book industry" saying they believe Runaway may just take off.
Welcome! THE RUNAWAY PASTOR is available once again. You can find it in your favorite e-reader or order at your local bookstore.

BREAKERS and RUNAWAY PASTOR Update
Well it has been a while since I've added anything to the novel. I did do a bit of writing last week, with some very interesting implications for the overall story, but I haven't moved it into the computer. (I wrote it by hand.) The new writing will be placed within the first nine, already completed chapters. So, the new writing is not a new chapter, but fills in some blanks for the overall story. It also adds a new wrinkle to the plot. I'm hoping you will enjoy it.
Also, I am trying to read the entire manuscript again, including old stuff which you haven't seen yet...unless you are my friend that typed my 7 year old sloppy notes. Once I'm able to do that, I feel I'll be able to move into new territory again. When I wrote The Runaway Pastor, I did it over the course of a few weeks, and the story flowed out of my mind, and into the word processor. But BREAKERS is an eight or nine year old work in progress, and I don't want for it to feel inorganic or disconnected. Thus, the delay.
This summer has been very busy. If you don't know me, I'm fortunate to have a full time job that keeps me more than full time busy. So this writing has to either be an overflow from my work, or written when I can justify an hour away from work. It will come along.
I should hear soon about the next stage of The Runaway Pastor. It is possible that I will need to put quite a lot of time here at the blog in advertising that book. If so, and if you have been a follower of that book, I'd appreciate you helping me get the word out when that time comes. It will be exciting, and advertising budgets could be limited. Your help will be treasured.
Here's to a great week ahead.

Whirlwind Week: A note about both novels
The past week has been a blur. I'm sorry I've been absent from here. When I've had a moment, I've had to put my creativity elsewhere.
However, I've had some good feedback from Mark Gilroy (my agent) regarding publisher responses to The Runaway Pastor. Still no contract. Some publishing houses still reading it. A cool rejection though! Sorry, can't explain that comment, but sometimes we might be defined by those who don't like our slant. And this one was OK with me.
Also, I continue to believe that some news regarding the publishing of The Runaway Pastor will be coming here very soon. Stay tuned.
Another cool development today. A well known personality who contacted me recently hoping for good news regarding Runaway's. They have committed to endorsing the book and writing some stuff for the back or front cover when it is published.
One more thing, a friend in the business gave me some awesome (and gratis!) advice on BREAKERS. I am so grateful, and hope to begin doing some more work on it before long. Don't be surprised if there is some additional material included in already posted chapters.
Finally, I am a pastor. The busy-ness this week has been intense yet gratifying. I do love the people I work with and those of our community. Tomorrow I will help with a funeral service. Two little girls and their mommy are grieving a daddy and husband and community hero who died too young. I pray for the grace of Christ to bring strength and healing to their broken hearts. I would appreciate you doing the same.
Peace.

BREAKERS Chapter NINE
Thanks for your interest in BREAKERS. I enjoyed getting back to it, and mixing some old writing that used to be in the first couple of chapters (in my original beginning several years ago), with some new stuff.
The skaters/surfers are completely new additions in this edition, and I kind of like them. I think they give us a new way to look at Cam. I really don't know how involved they will be in the ongoing of the book, but since their personalities are in my brain now, they could show up at any time.
I've also redone the scene here with the jeweler and his wife. This used to take place at the time when Kenna first took the ring to Mr. Schultz...making Cam and Kenna's first date at Breakers--the ocean side restaurant--a much different kind of thing. Again, I like seeing the changes and the developments as they are happening.
One more time. As the few of you who know me understand, I have a more than full-time job, and so opportunities to work on this project are rare. Usually they happen late at night when I am really tired; thus I am forced to make many editions and changes the next day or week or whenever another crack of time appears. Thanks for your patience and thanks for your continued interest and kind words. They encourage me.
Well, here is BREAKERS Chapter Nine. Enjoy, tell a friend about BREAKERS if you are enjoying it, and as always please give me your feedback. You can help decide the direction of this book, because I don't know what the ending will look like. However, I do have a master plan idea for an interface between the world of BREAKERS and that of The Runaway Pastor in a future book! (You read it here first.)
Oh, you haven't read chapters 1-8 of BREAKERS? Here they are!

BREAKERS Chapter Nine is on the way!
I wanted to put this out here in case you stop by looking for another chapter of BREAKERS. I am putting the final touches on chapter nine, and I think you'll really like it. It's getting intense. I was laughing one minute and sitting shocked the next minute as I wrote. (Right, I have no idea what's coming in my stories much of the time. It's more fun to let the characters do what the characters do.)
So remind your friends to read and be caught-up on BREAKERS' first eight chapters. And tonight, or at the latest Friday morning, I'll have the next chapter up here. I think you'll like it.

BREAKERS News
Good news for me!
Do you remember me saying that I'd written the beginning to BREAKERS years ago, printed out some along the way, then my hard drive crashed. I lost the last parts I'd written, but I had a printed copy of most.
So what I've been doing with BREAKERS is basically inputting the old stuff when I get a chance, and editing/adding along the way.
Well, last week a friend offered to type in all of the old stuff, so I could have it in electronic form on my computer. I kind of laughed inside, because what I have typed out is in rough shape. I've edited with a pen (or now faded pencil) in margins, or in between single spaced lines; and there are arrows snaking their way from one page to another. I couldn't imagine anyone (besides perhaps my wife who typed my thesis in days before word processing) being able to face the chore. But yesterday, that brave woman saw the mess, took ownership of it, and is doing this task! I'm amazed.
I guess this means getting more of BREAKERS out there will be easier for me. I'll have fewer excuses--at least until I run out of what I've written. Anyway, I wanted to let you know there was some progress happening.
Peace.

BREAKERS: First 8 Chapters! And THE RUNAWAY PASTOR Feedback Needed.
Hey, thanks for your interest and for asking for a copy of the first 8 chapters all in one document. BREAKERS is giving us an opportunity to explore on one level the idea of a Christian dating a non-Christian. More importantly, we explore some commonly accepted assumptions regarding how we define "Christian."
So welcome. Click here to read the first eight chapters of BREAKERS! And as always, please give me some feedback on the check boxes below, or via the comment option, or email me at samshill@sbcglobal.net.
IMPORTANT!! Also, I had a nice call from my agent yesterday. Once again, a couple of publishing houses have shown interest in The Runaway Pastor manuscript. I'll keep you posted on any progress, if it comes. If you have read the posted chapters of The Runaway Pastor, then I have a request to make. I need to compile a list of comments for my agent to use. Would you send me a short paragraph on facebook, or comment here or email me at samshill@sbcglobal.net? I would appreciate it.
I'll look forward to hearing from you.
Peace.

BREAKERS breakthrough
Wow, it has been a long dry spell for writing on BREAKERS. However, yesterday I sensed I was somewhat "caught-up" on my real work (yeah, right). And I sat down and began to write. Soon a chapter-length chunk of writing was written.
Today I need to work on adding a few things, and doing some first run editing. And later today, I'll hope to post chapter seven of BREAKERS here.
As some of you know, I began putting this book up here because I had written it years ago and thought it would be easy just to plug-in a chapter each week. Well, the book is changing, and yesterday's chapter is a completely new addition. So, what I'm telling you is that I'm not data entry-ing an old book, I'm writing a new one. Thanks for your patience as I move forward with this project. And as always, I want and need your honest feedback.
See you later today--I hope.

Dry Well, BREAKERS on Hold and RUNAWAY News
I was hoping to hit the ground running with more of BREAKERS when I returned. But my schedule and my brain have not cooperated: the well is dry. And I don't want to put really poor stuff out here.
It seems that I can write with ease and creativity when I'm not in the grind, but when I came home this time, my creativity dried-up. So, I'll try and get going again.
I spoke recently with the agent representing The Runaway Pastor I think I'll have some news to you by the end of the summer. I'll go out on a limb here and say that I believe Runaway will be available for your Christmas shopping this year. Hope you'll want to add it to a stocking or two.
In the mean time, I'd love to hear from you.
Peace.

Breakers: Chapter Six--Thanks for asking!
Here is chapter six. It was fun to create. I'm re-writing in this chapter, so it's pretty much new...except for Jon. He's been like this for years.
Please comment, check responses and if you are enjoying Breakers, why not tell some friends?
So DIVE IN HERE!
Grace and Peace to you.

Breakers, Monasticism, and a Coming Book Review.
This would have been a good week to be on vacation. My car refuses to drive off of our hill without stopping past the house next door...where my new grand daughter lives. (Yeah, there are a couple of other people there.)
My ministry has allowed me to care for many people, and study some interesting texts. I've looked in on the website for Formation House, and remembered a dream I've put on hold. I think I'll buy the book by one of the founders: Flirting with Monasticism. There is a part of me that is deeply drawn to the ancient rhythms of communal prayer and work.
I've been sent a book to review here: The Echo Within, by Robert Benson. Robert is one of my favorite writers, and I can't wait to get you this review. I can let you know this much: After the first fifty pages, I'm blown away. This is vintage Benson, but even more nurturing. Love it!
I've been able to take some late nights and early mornings and enter another chapter of Breakers. I look forward to sharing it with you very soon.
Peace to you. Thanks for your comments, shouts, check marks and for following along.

Breakers: Fifth Chapter! Link below.
Yesterday I was able to spend quite a bit of time writing, and today a friend and I proofed the next chapter of Breakers. So here it is.
As always, let me know of errors. This is fresh, so you will find them.
Hope you enjoy the fifth chapter, and if you haven't read Breakers yet, then all five chapters are here.
I like the way two world views are juxtaposed in the lead characters of the story. I'd love your comments.
Peace.

More Breakers sooner than I thought
I took much of the afternoon and some of this evening and worked on chapter five of Breakers. I will give it another look tomorrow, and if it seems ready, I'll post it up here by Tuesday. However, it could be tired eyes that are thinking it is almost there. Stay tuned, and thanks for your patience.
Regarding the grandchild. Nope. Nothing yet.
Peace to you.

Waiting for a Grandchild, Breakers in the Waiting Room?
Wow. It's different, this time spent waiting. We have prepared ourselves for a grandchild--our first. But now that we think we are ready...we wait.
Her dresser is filled with baby girl stuff. Her first few hundred diapers are purchased. Her parents have moved next door to us, and have nearly completed a room addition. (Yesterday we waited by painting.)
Today I waited by taking my day off in the forest hiking. I walked for five hours and around fifteen miles up and down hills, waiting. I suppose that is better than pacing outside of a delivery room. When mountain bikers asked me about my hike, I spoke of my daughter and her new baby. When the guy at the park gate gave me a map, I told him too. When a fellow hiker tagged along for the last few miles; he got filled-in. (You know, lots of pink in the room, I've greased-up the rocking chairs, and I'll be sure and teach her to hike.... That kind of stuff.)
My facebook status is an update about our waiting. I'm on the road this Sunday afternoon until next Wednesday; unless the waiting is over, and then the people I'm "coaching" in Ohio will be put on hold, and I'll get on the road toward the place of ...waiting.
So, I guess I'm not producing much here. I'm doing my work week as much like usual as possible--while--we--wait.
I'm thinking I'll take Breakers and my laptop with me to the hospital. Who knows, maybe I'll be extra creative while waiting there. But here, in my usual writing place, all I can think of is waiting...
Peace to you.

Serpents or Doves? And Breakers Timing
I wanted to link my readers to a post I just read. Such screaming back and forth between emergent and post-modern and traditional and poser people. I like the angle another blogger gave to this. You may too: Check it out here.
Plus, I know it's been a week since I put another chapter up...but this is a special week, you know. I hope to get back on pace next week. Maybe. Probably. Early in the week.
Peace to you. (Unless you need to be serpentine.--If you don't get this, click the link above.)

Chapter 3 of BREAKERS is Coming!
I have chapter three of Breakers in the bag, and plan to post it next Monday--March 23. I wanted to let you know if you checked back in.
I'm not sure how far I'll be going with this. The Runaway Pastor takes some powerful twists and turns after the first chapters, and I've been hesitant to post more than the first seven chapters of it. I don't want to give up too much of a book we are trying to market. But Breakers is a different thing. I probably have an estimated 16 chapters printed on this one, and as I remember, nothing too much is "given away" at the end of them. So I may just go for a while. Or maybe a publisher will jump in and say, "Wow, that's a best-seller in the making! Let's buy it!" Well, if that happens, all of you "comment and encourage" people won't be forgotten:-).
Hey, speaking of publishing, I want to put in a mercenary line or two here. A blog of this sort is a free way for me to have people read what I've written. And a few hundred different people from all over the country and around the world have shown interest in The Runaway Pastor already. That is gratifying, and has happened largely through word of mouth advertising by people like you. Thanks. And, if you like what you read here, please pass the word along. Tell friends, copy and paste the URL to people you think might like this theme.
If you haven't guessed, there is a thorny issue (at least one) in the plot of Breakers. A Christian minister guy is getting somewhat interested in an irreligious girl. This story is allowing me to explore questions of the walls which separate us...especially those that Christians seem to erect that Jesus didn't.
I've spent my life crossing borders of suspicion, culture and class. I've never met a person in which I don't see the stamp of the image of God. I believe deeply in all people--that each of us are potential representatives of the love of God. Breakers is giving me the chance to work out this idea.
By the way, this book probably needs a title besides this working one. Got an idea? Maybe after you read a bit further you will? I've also thought about "Worlds Apart." That feels a bit clumsy though.
Keep your eyes out here next Monday for chapter 3 of Breakers. And have a few friends look in as well.
Peace to you.
David

BREAKERS: Chapters 1, 2 and 3
Hope you had a great weekend. I had a chance on Friday (my day off) to do the third chapter. This has really been fun for me. Like I said earlier, this book crashed with a hard drive several years ago, and I had only printed out a bit of it. I began writing it about 8 or so years back. So Cam and Kenna are like old friends, and they struggle with stuff that interests me. I've always hoped for a chance to get back to Breakers. Thanks for encouraging me along the way. I'm grateful.
You can click here to go and read the first three chapters of the book.
Again, your comments both spoken and written are appreciated. I welcome any suggestions, editing or ideas for the book. Just send them to me here or on my email, which is listed along the side bar to the right. Example, I'm not married to the title of the book. Maybe you would like to suggest another? Have at it.
I'll look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for reading. And if you like it, tell your friends please!
Peace to you.
David

Just send them to me here or on my email, which is listed along the side bar to the right. Example, I'm not married to the title of the book. Maybe you would like to suggest another? Have at it.
I'll look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for reading. And if you like it, tell your friends please!
Peace to you.

BREAKERS: Chapters 1 and 2 and I think the link works!!!
Well, thanks for your interest. I can't believe how many people have already downloaded the first chapter. Last night, after an incredible day (Worship, performing a wedding for a girl I met the day she was born over 21 years ago, and attending two birthday parties) I had a chance to type in most of the next chapter. I finished chapter two early this morning.
Here are the first two chapters of my first experimentation with a novel--which has been buried for seven or eight years. I call it Breakers.
Grace and peace.

BREAKERS: Chapter One
Well, this is bold. Only because we are in "wait mode" for The Runaway Pastor to be marketed, do I introduce a book I've started, lost much of (due to a hard-drive crash) and put away for years.
Breakers is the first book I wrote. I hope I've gotten better since I wrote this--and yes, I've edited a bit as I've typed it back into the laptop. I do love the people of the story. They are kind of like friends I met seven or eight years ago, and always wondered how their story ended. Maybe you can help me decide.
I'm certain there will be multiple/many/a lot of editing errors. But here you go. It's a short chapter, but it is a start. And after posting, I'm heading for a night away with Shelly.
BREAKERS is here----

If you like it, spread the word! You may need another chapter though.
Peace to you!
